More about the Woodruff Plant

Woodruff is fairly common in all countries of Europe and Asia Minor, with the exception of Portugal and Iceland. In Belgium, the species fairly common in beech forests in the Netherlands and particularly in southern Limburg.

Although shade-loving plants thrive better in the temperate regions, but more in the south. Its habitat stretches from the lowlands into the mountains.

Bedding on the soil which grows in nature, the opinions vary. They range from a rather dry "to" all damp 'ground' an acid "to a pH 4.5 to 5.5 pH. The fact is that the herb prefers a shady spot, a loose, well-ventilated, and nutrient-rich soil with good humus formation and especially in the spring some moisture.

The plant is most prevalent in a lowland forest type, known as the oak-beech hedge. The following are characteristic trees: oak, hornbeam, cherry or boskriek, beech and ash (tree).

We find the woodruff herb layer of the dry part of the forest, on the horizontal or slightly sloping areas.

They grow together in a plant community with flowered walls, white clover dock, buttercup gold, wood anemone, rough clock, wake-robin, carnations Solomon, slim primrose, honeysuckle and wild eenbes.

Woodruff is a forest plants, which is a separate question on shade, moist, humus rich soil. In the sun, the leaves are light green so the white star shaped flowers almost no contrast more forms with the leaves and the plant loses much of its decorative value. On a sunny place, while the dry brown and the plant dies.

One can increase the plant by seed. New seed germinates well but may be one year old seed in the ground sit.

Since woodruff naturally produces few seeds, but many more flowers, it is usual to plant the cuttings or tearing.

Take in the spring or autumn cuttings of mature plants. Choose sturdy stems of 10 cm. And remove the lower leaves. Dip the cuttings in water first and then in a growth substance. This plant, with the bald area completely covered in a container filled with moist coarse sand. Keep the sand moist and place the container in the shade. The shoot cuttings root within three weeks. Plant them out.

In spring or early autumn can also rip the herb. This is done by the roots of the excavated plants in a combing motion of the fingers to distribute (make sure to minimize root breakage) and from opposing action. Count new planting holes where the roots good fit. Into each hole is a 5 to 10 cm thick layer of compost. Plant the new poll as high as before and 20 and 30 cm apart. Regular watering until they well entrenched. Especially to make it soggy.

Woodruff is an ideal ground cover for difficult areas in the garden. It grows in such a dry shaded ground under a tree, or just on a tree stump. Bedding is a beautiful plant for both the wild and for the ornamental garden.

In summer you can also woodruff flower pots in the house. They require a moist well drained soil, cool temperatures and at least 5 hours per day indirect sunlight.
